ALASKA
Saturday March 23rd, 2024
Ryan called Juneau home for many years, as did his sister Sarah and niblings Margot & Ramón. Max has spent 5 stretches of time with Ryan in Juneau and in other regions of Alaska since 2020.
Thank you
for being part of
Love On Planet Earth Alaska!
Below, check out a few shots from our ski & celebration adventures in Juneau. You can find more shots on our Instagram.
…We’ll see you in New York & Georgia & Colorado!
Noon – 4:00pm
Ski Day at Eaglecrest Ski Area on Douglas Island
It’s the ‘backcountry’ portion of the Urban Backcountry Pageant Extravaganza! We’ll spend the day at Eaglecrest bathing in sunshine and carving fresh powder. (Insert fingers-crossed emoji for cooperative Southeast Alaska weather). You can grab your lift ticket at the window that morning, if that’s easiest. We’ll convene at Pittman’s Pub, at the base of the mountain, for a midday toast. Click here for mountain info, gear rentals, & lift tickets.
Attire: colorful / metallic / gender-bending ski-wear. Click here for inspo.
What to bring: skis or snowboard. A bite or a bev or a noisemaker, for the 1:30pm celebration moment (see below). The aforementioned colorful / metallic / gender-bending ski-wear.
Noon or so: Meet outside the Eaglecrest Lodge for a day on the mountain!
2pm or so: Convene at Pittman’s Pub, at the foot of the mountain, for a toast and a holler.
6:00pm – 10:00pm
Pageant Extravaganza at McPhetres Hall in downtown Juneau, 325 Gold Street
Party, potluck, dance, and officially kick off the Love On Planet Earth tour, at one of Juneau’s centerpiece performance and community spaces.
Attire: We’re counting on you to set the Pageant Extravaganza standard: metallic, gender-bending, formal-with-flare. Click here for inspo.
What to bring: Please bring a dish to share for dinner, and BYOB.
6:00pm: gather, gab, nosh, & dance
7-7:30pm: ritual
8pm onward: keep on with the gabbing & noshing & dancing
Travel, Lodging, & Logistics for Alaska
How to get there: Travel into and out of Juneau on Alaska Airlines, or, if you’ve got some time on your hands, on the Alaska Marine Highway System. As you probably know, you can’t travel in by car; Juneau’s the only state capital with no road access. If you’ve got questions or need some guidance, please let Ryan live out his dream of working as an Alaska travel agent by dropping him a note or giving him a call.
Where to stay: We recommend staying in downtown Juneau for the best walkability to the waterfront, to mountain trails, and to shops and city landmarks. Check out:
The Silverbow Inn. Rooftop hot tub, right downtown! If you plan to book here, let Ryan know, and he’ll give the hotel owner Jill a heads-up.
Four Points by Sheraton. Ground floor restaurant and bar.
…Good ol’ Airbnb.
Logistics & venue transportation: You can get around downtown Juneau on foot, and/or on the city bus. Eaglecrest Ski Area provides a shuttle from downtown to the mountain. McPhetres Hall, the location of the party, is downtown at 325 Gold Street and is walkable from all the above lodging. …If you’re interested in exploring the larger Juneau area (Douglas Island, Mendenhall Valley and Glacier, Auke Bay, and “Out the Road”), you might consider renting a car.
Parking: Eaglecrest Ski Area offers plenty of parking. For McPhetres Hall, please enjoy the adventure of downtown street parking in Juneau. You could also walk from the Main Street Parking Garage or the Marine Park Parking Garage.
Eaglecrest lift tickets & gear rentals: Click here for mountain info & tickets.
What to do (beyond Love on Planet Earth):
Visit the Mendenhall Glacier
Walk Kootéeyaa Deiyí, the Totem Pole Trail on the Juneau waterfront
Hike Perseverance Trail, the Flume Trail, and any number of other trails from town
Visit the Alaska State Museum
Live music downtown: The Alaskan Bar; the Crystal Saloon; the Red Dog Saloon; and more
Don’t miss the tasty gin at Amalga Distillery
Take the Juneau Voices Audio Walk. It’s a one-hour experience of community stories that Ryan co-produced with Lillian Petershoare, commissioned by the City & Borough of Juneau.
If you’re in Juneau on Friday March 22, check in with Ryan to see if you can come to the culminating performance event that afternoon of the spring break arts camp he’s facilitating for 4th through 6th graders as part of Sealaska Heritage Institute’s “Voices on the Land” program.
